Should You Use Magnets for Cauliflower Ear Treatment & Management?
With the rise of grappling sports more and more athletes are running into the problem of cauliflower ear. Most athletes turn to forums or Facebook groups looking for guidance and are told to use magnets to compress their damaged ear to prevent it from filling, or refilling if the cauliflower ear was recently drained. There are however some drawbacks of using magnets especially if you buy generic magnets that aren’t specifically designed for the ears.
Why People Use Magnets for Cauliflower Ear
There are many ways to create pressure for the ear, clothespins, tightly wrapping the head, clamps, and magnets. But of these options, magnets are the only easily accessible option that is easy to use, doesn’t necessarily need a medical professional’s intervention, and doesn’t look super awkward on someone’s head (like a clothespin). They’re fairly cheap and simple, you get two magnets that you place on either side of the ear to compress the cartilage back together until the ear has healed.
So why should someone look outside of magnets to prevent or manage their cauliflower ear?
Ear Splinting is proven to be the most effective option
Let’s look at a few important points when it comes to cauliflower Ear and the pros and cons of magnets vs Ear Splinting.
Do magnets have the right amount of pressure for cauliflower ear?
If you go cheap with generic neodymium magnets off of the internet, it’s the luck of the draw. Some might have just enough pressure to compress the ear. Others will not have enough attraction to adequately compress the ear. Some will have too much force and can cause more damage to the ear or simply be too painful to wear long enough for the ear to actually heal.
Premium silicone magnets will be a bit more reliable but the force can still vary with some not being strong enough and others being too painful to wear long enough.
Since EarSplintz is molded directly from the shape of your ear, it creates the perfect amount of pressure to keep the ear from ever filling up and is soft enough to be the least painful option available.
Is the material safe for the ears?
This one is simple. Generic magnets are probably not safe for your ears. They are made overseas without any thought as to what the material will do with prolonged exposure to human skin.
Silicone-covered magnets will be safe on the skin unless that person has a specific silicon allergy.
Earsplintz uses an FDA-approved material formulated specifically for the ears.
How well protected is the ear as a whole?
Here’s where the biggest benefits from moving from magnets to splinting for cauliflower ear really start to become apparent. Some companies that produce silicone-covered magnets include multiple sizes that offer a bit more ear coverage for compression. Use the bigger disks on the outside of the ear, use the smaller ones for the “bowl” of the ear. The problem is that the point of this pressure is to keep the ear from filling with A LIQUID. One of the most basic principles of a liquid is that it flows around obstacles.
What this means is that even if you’re creating pressure on one or two points on the ear, the liquid will start to flow around them. This leads to the problem where someone ends up getting cauliflower ear in other parts of the ear that weren’t originally a problem area.
Another big problem with using “Disks” to compress an ear is that ears are not flat surfaces. creating this pressure while the remaining liquid in the ear is hardening can cause the ear to “heal” in strange flattened shapes.
Using EarSplintz you create a 360-degree mold of the ear (front and back) so that you heal the ear back into the exact shape it was originally. EarSplintz is also the only option that creates compression inside the entrance to the ear canal, preventing the worst-case scenario from cauliflower ear, loss of hearing.
How EarSplintz Prevent Cauliflower Ear
The basic idea is the athlete can mold their ear before its damaged to wear AFTER TRAINING to keep the ear compressed so that there’s no space that can fill with fluid and so the cartilage can heal back together Meaning they can’t get cauliflower ear, even without wearing headgear!
We built upon the research of multiple studies to make a cauliflower ear prevention kit formatted specifically to allow anyone without any medical background to make a simple mold of the athlete’s ear in just 5 minutes.
With the mold made, the athlete simply needs to wear the kit for a few hours after training when the ear is sore to prevent it from ever taking on fluid. (Never wear EarSplintz while training or competing.)
Complete cauliflower ear prevention you wear exclusively off of the mat
Since it’s custom made for your ear’s shape and size, it ensures perfectly even pressure. this will help it keep the correct shape while reducing pain
Its molded and ready in under 5 minutes per ear
Once molded, the kit can be used unlimited times, travels easy, and can even be put in the freezer to make a cold compress to wear after a hard training session
